"Defending Martial Law as 'Enlightenment Law' Is Trash Behavior"
"Not a Political Issue, but a Matter of Humanity... Lost and Lonely"
A friend who had supported Korean history lecturer Jeon Hangil in various ways in the past has publicly declared an end to their relationship after Jeon made remarks at an anti-impeachment rally for President Yoon Suk-yeol, saying that "martial law was enlightenment law." Kim Hochang, CEO of Upstudy and an admissions expert, explained his reasons for cutting ties with Jeon via social media on the 24th, stating, "It's not because of differing political views, but because he did something that a human being should never do."
In his post, Kim revealed his long-standing relationship with Jeon, recalling, "When he came up from Daegu after going bankrupt, I wasn't well-off either, but I fed him and gave him a place to sleep," and added, "I brought him to my rooftop room, gave him the warmest sleeping bag, and I slept on the floor." He further mentioned that he searched for ways for them to get back on their feet together and stayed by Jeon's side even when he attempted to make an extreme choice.

The turning point in their relationship came at the anti-impeachment rally held on Geumnam-ro in Gwangju on the 15th of last month. At this rally, Jeon made remarks defending martial law, and Kim strongly criticized this, saying, "To say 'martial law was enlightenment law' in front of bereaved families who lost siblings and parents is a vicious mockery."
Kim repeatedly urged Jeon, "Don't go to Gwangju," and "If you must go, go and apologize," but Jeon did not change his mind. Kim criticized Jeon's trip to Gwangju, saying, "It's no different from Ilbe members who laughed and ate jajangmyeon next to parents fasting after losing their children in the Sewol ferry disaster."
Ultimately, Kim ended their relationship by posting on social media, "Let's cut ties, you trash." He said, "A truly pitiful life is one where you have not a single friend to stop you from going down the wrong path," and added, "It wasn't about political views; as a friend, I had to speak up because he acted like trash."
Kim also said, "The harshest curse is to say, 'Don't come to my funeral,'" and explained, "The reason I dislike Chun Doo-hwan is not only because he was a murderer, but because he never once reflected on his actions until the day he died." He added, "If you don't reflect either, I won't see you even in heaven."
On the 23rd, Jeon Hangil, a Korean history instructor, and Yoon Sanghyun, a member of the People Power Party, attended the "Gwangju-Jeonnam Patriotic Citizens' General Rally Opposing Presidential Impeachment" held at Antioch Church in Seo-gu, Gwangju. He also mentioned the last conversation he had with Jeon in the past. Recalling Jeon's words, "Don't go near party politics in the future, and when we get old, let's live close by and spend our later years together," Kim added, "I don't know how things ended up like this. I feel lost and deeply bitter."
