A Stage Where Sorrow and Consolation Coexist

Cellist Lee Jeong-ran will hold a cello recital titled "Aega (哀歌)" at 8 p.m. on the 15th at the IBK Chamber Hall in the Seoul Arts Center.

The first piece will be Sibelius's "Marinconia." This will be followed by "Sonata No. 3 for Cello and Piano" by Ryu Jae-jun, the artistic director of the Seoul International Music Festival.

Ryu Jae-jun's Sonata No. 3 for Cello and Piano is a work dedicated to the great cellist Arto Noras on the occasion of his 80th birthday. Director Ryu has maintained a long friendship and deep bond with Noras, and through this sonata, he tells the story of the maestro's life. It begins with a calm and warm melody, followed by the first movement with a sad yet somewhat detached and serene melody, the second movement full of energy with fast and brilliant movements, and concludes with passionate third and fourth movements.

In the second half of the program, two works by Grieg will be performed. The first piece is the second movement Allegretto of Grieg's Violin Sonata No. 3, arranged for cello. The final piece will be Grieg's Sonata for Cello and Piano.

Lee Jeong-ran studied at Seoul Arts High School and Seoul National University, and furthered her studies at the Paris Conservatory. She won first place at the Pablo Casals Competition and the Isang Yun International Music Competition. She served as associate principal cellist of the Seoul Metropolitan Symphony Orchestra and is currently a visiting professor at Yonsei University, nurturing future musicians while actively performing as a member of the Kumho Soloists, Ensemble Opus, and Trio Jade.
