The Korea Student Aid Foundation (Chairman Bae Byungil) and the Ministry of Education (Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Education Lee Juhyo) are accepting applications for the second round of the National Scholarship for the first semester of the 2025 academic year from 9:00 a.m. on the 4th of last month until 6:00 p.m. on the 18th.
The National Scholarship is an income-linked scholarship provided by the government to university students who meet certain academic criteria and whose income and assets fall below a specified level, with the goal of alleviating the burden of tuition fees.
The financial aid eligibility level is determined by considering the income assessment of the student and their family members (parents or spouse), the converted income value of assets such as real estate, and deductions based on the number of siblings. The assessment process generally takes about eight weeks.
During this second application period, new students (those scheduled to enroll in the first semester), transfer students, re-admitted students, returning students, and current students who missed the first application period can apply for the National Scholarship. After the second application deadline, it will no longer be possible to apply for the National Scholarship for the first semester of the 2025 academic year, so applicants must ensure they apply within the designated period. However, the principle is that current students should apply during the first round, and only twice during their enrollment can they apply in the second round.
The Korea Student Aid Foundation urged university students who have not yet applied for the National Scholarship to do so as soon as possible, as the website may experience heavy traffic and access issues on the final day of the application period.
For the 2025 academic year, the eligibility criteria will be expanded from the previous financial aid level 8 or below to level 9 or below, significantly increasing the number of beneficiaries from approximately one million to 1.5 million. Newly eligible students in level 9 can receive an annual scholarship of 1 million KRW for National Scholarship Type I, 1.35 million KRW per year for the first and second child in multi-child families, and 2 million KRW per year for the third child or more. Therefore, students who were not eligible for scholarships in the 2024 academic year due to income requirements should check their eligibility and actively apply for the scholarship.
