China Imposes 25-100% Retaliatory Tariffs on Certain Canadian Agricultural and Fishery Products Starting from the 20th

China will impose additional tariffs ranging from 25% to 100% on certain Canadian agricultural and fishery products. This is a retaliation against Canada’s imposition of a 100% tariff on Chinese automobiles last year.

According to Chinese media such as Zailianshe on the 8th (local time), the Chinese State Council Tariff Commission announced that starting from the 20th, it will impose a 100% additional tariff on Canadian canola oil, oil cake, and peas. China also decided to impose a 25% additional tariff on Canadian seafood and pork.

A spokesperson for the Chinese Ministry of Commerce stated, "Despite China’s repeated opposition and warnings, Canada unilaterally imposed restrictive measures on certain products imported from China without investigation, damaging China-Canada economic and trade relations."

Earlier, in September last year, China launched an anti-discrimination investigation against Canada, which had decided to impose additional tariffs on Chinese electric vehicles, aluminum, and steel, a move that could lead to trade retaliation. Canada announced that from October 1 last year, it would impose a 100% tariff on Chinese electric vehicles, and from October 22, a 25% tariff on Chinese steel and aluminum products.

On this day, China expressed its position, urging "Canada to immediately correct its wrongful practices, lift the restrictive measures, and eliminate the negative impacts."
