Lee Jae-myung: "Yoon's destruction of the constitution does not disappear just because the prosecution made a basic arithmetic mistake"

Lee Jae-myung of the Democratic Party of Korea stated on the 7th regarding the court's decision to cancel the detention of President Yoon Seok-yeol, "Just because the prosecution made a basic arithmetic mistake does not mean that the clear fact that President Yoon Seok-yeol committed an unconstitutional military coup and destroyed the constitutional order disappears."

On the same day, Lee made these remarks in response to reporters' questions about the court's decision. He said, "The rebellion is still ongoing, and overcoming the rebellion is our critical task," adding, "Together with the great people, we will surely complete the revolution of light."

Regarding the impeachment trial of President Yoon currently underway at the Constitutional Court, he said, "Just because the prosecution made a mistake in arithmetic does not mean that the clear military coup and unconstitutional acts did not occur." The court's decision is only about procedural issues and does not change the judgment on the essential acts such as rebellion.

Concerning the investigation of the crime of rebellion by the Corruption Investigation Office for High-ranking Officials, he said, "The people judge the substantive facts as acts of rebellion," and "The court will decide on procedural issues later." He added, "At first glance, aside from the prosecution's mistake in calculating the detention period, it seems difficult to find other errors."

When asked whether the prosecution would decide not to appeal the court's decision, he did not give a direct answer.

Earlier, the Democratic Party urged the prosecution to file an appeal.

Park Chan-dae, the floor leader of the Democratic Party, said after a party meeting that day, "We regret the acceptance of the request to cancel the detention," and urged, "The prosecution must immediately appeal." Han Min-soo, the Democratic Party spokesperson, also stated after an emergency supreme council meeting, "What kind of release is this for the ringleader of the rebellion?" and insisted, "The prosecution must immediately appeal." The spokesperson pointed out, "This court decision is completely unrelated to and will not affect the Constitutional Court's impeachment trial of President Yoon Seok-yeol," and added, "(The decision to cancel President Yoon's detention) is a procedural issue arising from the difference in interpretation between the prosecution and the court regarding the calculation of the detention period."
