Revision of the "Student Safety Support Ordinance"
The Gwangju Office of Education will expand the scope of support for field experience learning until June and revise the Student Safety Support Ordinance to reduce the burden on teachers.
On the 5th, the city office announced during a ‘Business Meeting for the Operation of Field Experience Learning’ held at the main office that it has decided to expand support to include on-campus experiential learning. Previously, support was only available for off-campus training activities and overnight or one-day field trips, but starting this year, activities conducted by instructors visiting schools will also be supported.
This measure was introduced to alleviate the burden on teachers and ensure the smooth operation of the curriculum, following the spread of reluctance toward field experience learning after the 2022 Sokcho, Gangwon-do student fatality incident and the subsequent criminal liability ruling against the accompanying teacher.
In addition, to ensure student safety, the ‘Gwangju City Ordinance on Student Safety Support for Field Experience Learning at All Levels of Schools’ will be revised. The standards and methods for assigning support staff will be clarified to protect student safety.
Superintendent Lee Jungseon stated, “Through expanded support for safe field experience learning and reducing the burden on teachers, we will prioritize the safety of both students and teachers,” and added, “We will do our best to ensure that the curriculum is not diminished.”
