Reinforcement of Ceilings and Walls to Improve Insulation Inside and Outside the Building
Operation of a 'Temporary Library' with New Books on the First Floor of the Annex
Daejeon Hanbat Library, which has become outdated after 36 years since its opening, will undergo a full-scale renovation with an investment of 10 billion KRW.
According to Daejeon City on the 5th, Hanbat Library has been selected for the Green Remodeling Project by the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport, securing 7 billion KRW in national funds and adding 3 billion KRW from the city budget for a total of 10 billion KRW to carry out extensive facility improvements.
The Green Remodeling Project is a public contest project led by the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport and promoted by the Korea Infrastructure Safety and Technology Corporation, aimed at improving the energy performance of public buildings over 10 years old and reducing greenhouse gas emissions.
The city plans to reinforce the ceiling and walls to improve insulation inside and outside the Hanbat Library building, replace windows with high-performance models, install high-efficiency heating and cooling systems, replace outdated equipment, and install solar panels.
Since its opening in 1989, there have been partial renovations such as the creation of a three-story book cafe-style reading space, but this is the first time a full-scale remodeling will be carried out for the entire building from the second basement level to the fourth floor above ground.
Accordingly, library operations will be suspended from April to November. To minimize inconvenience for citizens, Hanbat Library plans to operate a 'temporary library' in part of the first floor of the annex, which is excluded from the construction area, providing about 30,000 new and popular books.
Additionally, before the closure, the maximum number of books that can be borrowed per person will be increased to 30, and the loan period will be extended through the 'long-term book loan service.'
The popular 'Hope Book' and 'Preview' services, which are widely used by citizens, will continue as before, and various reading and cultural programs previously operated by Hanbat Library will be relocated to nearby cultural and educational facilities such as the former Chungnam Provincial Government building and local schools.
Kim Hyejeong, Director of Hanbat Library in Daejeon, said, "Through the green remodeling construction, we are carrying out extensive facility improvements and have decided on a temporary closure with the safety of citizens as our top priority. We will do our best to complete the project without any setbacks so that Hanbat Library can be reborn as a more eco-friendly and pleasant space."
