Highlighting Musical Transformations of the Early and Mid-20th Century
Sonatas by Janacek, Poulenc, and Bartok
Violinist Lim Dong-min and pianist Choi Hyung-rok will hold their first duo recital on the 4th at the IBK Chamber Hall in the Seoul Arts Center.
Under the subtitle "A New Chapter," Lim Dong-min and Choi Hyung-rok will perform works by Jan??ek, Poulenc, and Bart?k, who led musical changes in the early to mid-20th century, as well as pieces by the original contemporary female composer Saariaho.
Jan??ek's Violin Sonata, Poulenc's Violin Sonata, and Bart?k's Violin Sonata No. 1 all reflect the turbulent times marked by war. In particular, Jan??ek's and Bart?k's sonatas feature distinctive folk melodies and rhythms throughout their compositions. Saariaho's Nocturne for solo violin offers a new realm of contemporary music through the violin's tone color, rhythm, and atmosphere.
Lim Dong-min has won the KBS KEPCO Music Competition and the Seoul International Music Competition, and since last year, he has been performing on a Matteo Goffriller (1715-1720) violin sponsored by the German Federal Music Foundation.
Choi Hyung-rok won first place in the piano category at the Sendai International Music Competition in Japan and was a quarterfinalist at the Chopin International Piano Competition as well as a finalist at the Ferruccio Busoni International Piano Competition.
The two first collaborated on the album project
Lim Dong-min said, "Through this performance, I want to convey the vitality and emotion of works born amid rapidly changing musical trends," adding, "I hope this will be a time to open a new chapter of music together with the audience."
