Improvement of Provocative Signboards
Removal of Lighting
On the 27th, it was announced through a press briefing that the signboard improvement project in the area of the red-light district along Tongbok Market-ro, a traditional market in Pyeongtaek-si, Gyeonggi-do, has been completed.
This area is densely populated with so-called "Bangseokjip" red-light establishments, and due to slumization and provocative signboards creating a harmful environment, residents have continuously demanded improvements.

The city aimed to improve urban aesthetics and pedestrian environments, and after continuous communication with general businesses and bar owners since May last year, formed the "Signboard Improvement Project Residents' Council," consisting of village chiefs and business owners.
In particular, a full survey was conducted on general businesses and bar establishments within the 865-meter section from Tongbok Market-ro 26beon-gil to Tongbok Market 2-ro 29beon-gil, the target area of the signboard improvement project, promoting participation in the project. Based on the consent of a total of 64 businesses, including 26 general businesses and 38 bars, the project was implemented.
From September to November last year, the city commissioned a detailed design service for signboard designs, discovering various designs, and through resident briefings, collected owners' opinions to derive designs considering urban aesthetics and surrounding landscapes.
For general businesses, old signboards were replaced with sophisticated channel-type signboards, and window advertisements attached inside the establishments were also regulated according to legal standards. For bars, the original vivid colors and provocative patterns of signboards and window advertisements were revised, and lighting that created a nightlife atmosphere was also removed.
Jung Jang-seon, mayor of Pyeongtaek, said, "Through the signboard improvement project in the Tongbok Market-ro area, we have been able to resolve a long-standing wish of the residents," adding, "We will continue to actively improve elements that harm the urban aesthetics."
