With the selection of the Daejeon Marshalling Yard relocation and development plan as a "National Leading Project for Railway Three-Dimensionalization," Daejeon City has begun preparing strategies to maximize synergy effects.
According to Daejeon City on the 27th, the Daejeon Marshalling Yard was established in 1978 at 426 Eumnae-dong, Daedeok-gu, on a site of 483,940 square meters (146,000 pyeong), together with the marshalling yard station as a train connection and light maintenance facility. However, as the city expanded, the east and west of Daehwa-dong and Jungni-dong in Daedeok-gu became disconnected, acting as an obstacle to development. For over 40 years, residents have continuously filed complaints about the inconvenience, making the relocation proposal by the local government and political circles difficult to realize.
The Daejeon Marshalling Yard relocation and development project, now being pursued as a national project for the first time in over 40 years, will in its first phase relocate the current Daejeon Marshalling Yard from Eumnae-dong, Daedeok-gu, to the area of 13-4 Sangseo-dong, Daedeok-gu (169,500 square meters), to the east side of the current Daejeon Railroad Vehicle Maintenance Depot.
As part of the second phase, which is the development plan (draft) for the remaining railway facilities and available land after the marshalling yard's relocation, once the track relocation is completed, a railway deck park will be constructed over the remaining Gyeongbu Line up and down tracks and Honam Line up and down tracks, on approximately 380,000 square meters of available land (70% state-owned, 27% owned by public corporations).
In addition, on about 260,000 square meters of land to be created as a new urban space, the plan is to steadily promote the construction of a new nearby Ojeong Station, where the Chungcheong Region Metropolitan Railway and Urban Railway Line 2 (hydrogen tram) will transfer. The city also aims to actively utilize surrounding industrial complexes, Daedeok Special Zone, and urban regeneration infrastructure to transform the area into Daejeon's premier youth startup and IT-based advanced specialized district, integrating business, residential, cultural, and transportation functions.
To this end, the city will establish a joint cooperation system with central government agencies, related organizations, and local districts. The Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport, the National Railway Authority, and Korea Railroad Corporation will be responsible for the relocation of the Daejeon Marshalling Yard and the creation of alternative sites, while Daejeon City will establish the basic plan for the development of available railway land.
When establishing the basic plan, the city intends to optimize the project to maximize Daejeon's growth potential and will actively reflect measures to enhance the project's profitability through direct construction and sales, in addition to site development and sales in the future.
Lee Taekgu, Daejeon Deputy Mayor for Economic and Science Affairs, said, "The marshalling yard relocation and development project will serve as a catalyst for Daejeon's development over the next 100 years, and we will focus all administrative efforts to ensure its early realization. We aim to make it a national role model for railway three-dimensionalization, targeting various ripple effects such as resolving the east-west disconnection, promoting balanced regional development, and revitalizing the urban center."
