Chungnam Province Partners with 51 Organizations and Groups to Promote RE100 Initiative

Kim Tae-heum: "We Will Achieve Carbon Neutrality by Expanding and Supplying Renewable Energy"

Chungnam Province Partners with 51 Organizations and Groups to Promote RE100 Initiative

Chungnam Province, which has declared itself a Special Carbon Neutral Economic Zone, has joined hands with related organizations, associations, and companies in the province to promote the spread of RE100.

On the afternoon of the 26th, Chungnam Province held the "Powerful Chungnam RE100 Promotion Business Agreement Ceremony" at the Provincial Government Culture and Arts Hall, attended by Governor Kim Tae-heum, heads of 51 organizations and associations in the province, and about 300 executives and staff members.

At the agreement ceremony, which was held to secure the implementation of the RE100 policy and expand the supply of renewable energy, 51 organizations agreed to work together to promote the RE100 policy, realize carbon neutrality, and mutually cooperate and support projects to expand the supply of renewable energy.

Due to the increase in electricity consumption driven by industrial structural changes such as artificial intelligence, semiconductors, mobility, and digital sectors, and the gradual reduction in power generation from thermal power plants, the province plans to expand renewable energy facilities through renewable energy supply projects. By 2035, the proportion of renewable energy in industrial electricity consumption will be increased from 22% to 90% to compensate for the shortfall in power generation.

Specifically, the plan to expand renewable energy includes reflecting the RE100 plan in newly established industrial complexes, while in existing industrial complexes, starting with the Cheonan Smart Green Industrial Complex selected in last year’s public contest, solar power generation facilities will be installed on factory rooftops and unused spaces such as parking lots.

In addition, public idle sites such as parking lots and traditional markets will also be equipped with solar power generation facilities, and ongoing projects such as the convergence support project, housing support project, and the creation of energy-independent villages will be gradually expanded.

The offshore wind power complex projects underway off the coasts of Boryeong and Taean in the West Sea are being pursued with the goal of obtaining a power generation business license for Boryeong by 2026, and starting construction of one out of five complexes in Taean this year. In Seosan and Dangjin, the creation of hydrogen cities will be promoted in parallel to establish a healthy hydrogen ecosystem.

There are also plans to link the ongoing establishment of smart livestock complexes with eco-friendly bioenergy generation and tidal power generation utilizing tidal differences.

City and county governments will encourage the participation of companies related to renewable energy supply permits, while Chungnam Technopark, Korea Industrial Complex Corporation Chungcheong Regional Headquarters, Chungnam Development Corporation, and Chungnam Environmental Movement Federation will promote various renewable energy supply policies such as publicity and installation support to realize carbon neutrality.

Governor Kim Tae-heum said, "The province is taking the lead in achieving '2045 carbon neutrality' five years ahead of the central government and, as the first in the nation to declare a 'Special Carbon Neutral Economic Zone,' is leading the way in energy transition and industrial restructuring for national carbon neutrality. We will rapidly expand and supply renewable energy to meet the growing demand for electricity and ensure the realization of carbon neutrality."
