A mountain resembling a dog's head has been spotted near the Yangtze River in Hubei Province, China, gaining sensational popularity on local social media platforms (SNS). What was once an ordinary landscape quickly became a tourist attraction with just a single photo.
According to the Associated Press on the 25th, Guo Qingshan, a designer living in Shanghai, discovered the uniquely shaped mountain while hiking during a visit to his hometown, Yichang in Hubei Province, on the 20th of last month.
After photographing the mountain, Guo realized that its shape closely resembled a dog's head. It looked as if a dog was resting its head by the riverbank, with its nose touching the water's edge. He said, "The dog's posture seemed as if it was drinking water or watching fish."
The photo was posted on Xiaohongshu, China's version of Instagram, on the 14th with the caption "Dog Mountain," and received 120,000 likes within just 10 days. On Weibo, the hashtag "Xiaogoushan," meaning "Dog Mountain" in Chinese, has garnered millions of views, attracting intense interest.
Since then, social media has been flooded with photos comparing people's pet dogs to Dog Mountain, and the observation deck located in Zhuguixian, Yichang, is bustling with tourists who come to see the mountain in person. Some visitors even bring their dogs along to take pictures together.
People have also started sharing previously taken photos of Dog Mountain. Most said they had not realized the mountain looked like a dog before. A local resident of Yichang posted a photo taken at the same location in 2021, saying, "After seeing Dog Mountain photos online and searching for the place, I realized I had been there before." Comments such as "I used to go there often but never noticed it," and "It's really amazing once you know," have been pouring in.
