'Trump Tariff Shock' KOSPI and KOSDAQ Open Lower

On the 10th, the Korean stock market opened lower amid concerns over tariffs announced by U.S. President Donald Trump.

As of 9:38 a.m., the KOSPI was trading at 2,506.22, down 15.70 points (0.62%) from the previous trading day. The index started the day at 2,510.64, down 11.28 points (0.45%). Currently, foreigners are net selling 53.5 billion KRW, and institutions are net selling 10.4 billion KRW. Individuals are the sole net buyers with purchases worth 74.5 billion KRW.


Among the top market capitalization stocks, HD Hyundai Heavy Industries (2.41%), Hanwha Ocean (2.10%), and NAVER (1.55%) are showing gains. Meanwhile, POSCO Holdings (-2.93%), Kia (-2.90%), SK Hynix (-1.58%), Samsung C&T (-1.58%), Celltrion (-1.45%), Hanwha Aerospace (-1.44%), Hyundai Mobis (-1.21%), and LG Energy Solution (-1.04%) are declining.


By sector, entertainment and culture (1.39%), textiles and apparel (0.88%), construction (0.61%), and telecommunications (0.47%) are rising. Conversely, metals (-2.13%), medical and precision (-1.37%), chemicals (-0.97%), and pharmaceuticals (-0.88%) sectors are falling. Notably, steel stocks including POSCO Holdings are uniformly weak in early trading. On the 9th (local time), President Trump told reporters, "Any steel coming into the U.S. will be subject to a 25% tariff. The same applies to aluminum."



On the 7th (local time), the three major New York stock indices closed down around 1%. On the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE), the Dow Jones Industrial Average closed at 44,303.40, down 444.23 points (0.99%) from the previous session. The S&P 500 index fell 57.58 points (0.95%) to 6,025.99, and the Nasdaq Composite dropped 268.59 points (1.36%) to close at 19,523.40.


At the same time, the KOSDAQ index recorded 739.22, down 3.68 points (0.50%) from the previous session. The index started the day at 740.12, down 2.78 points (0.37%). Foreigners sold stocks worth 113.6 billion KRW. Individuals and institutions are net buyers of 102.5 billion KRW and 13.5 billion KRW, respectively.


Among the top market capitalization stocks, Voronoi (11.06%), SM Entertainment (6.62%), Peptron (4.50%), JYP Ent. (3.86%), Hugel (2.99%), and PharmaResearch (1.32%) are rising. On the other hand, Rainbow Robotics (-4.99%), Samchundang Pharm (-4.13%), HPSP (-3.15%), Shinseong Delta Tech (-2.98%), Enchem (-2.79%), and EcoPro BM (-1.73%) are declining.
