Gwangju City and export-related organizations held an emergency meeting and decided to make an all-out effort to strengthen the competitiveness of the region's export industries in response to the 'Trump tariff policy'.

According to Gwangju City on the 6th, an 'Emergency Meeting on Response to Trump 2.0 Tariff Policy' was held the previous afternoon in the city hall's small conference room, presided over by Mayor Kang Gijung. The meeting was attended by representatives from Gwangju Technopark, Gwangju Future Automotive Mobility Promotion Institute, Gwangju Institute, Korea Electronics Technology Institute, Gwangju-Jeonnam KOTRA Support Group, Korea International Trade Association Gwangju-Jeonnam Regional Headquarters, Bank of Korea Gwangju-Jeonnam Headquarters, Financial Supervisory Service Gwangju Branch, and Gwangju Industry-Academia Convergence Institute, among other export-related organizations.

The emergency meeting was convened in response to Mayor Kang's directive for swift action, reflecting growing local concerns about the 'Trump tariff war.' It was held just one day after the decision to expand the 'Home Appliance Industry Competitiveness Enhancement Task Force,' which has been operating since the end of last year, into the 'Export Industry Competitiveness Enhancement Task Force.'

Participants discussed key response measures to mitigate the economic shock to the region caused by the Trump 2.0 administration's sudden and aggressive shift in tariff policy. In particular, they focused on the impact of slowing exports in the automotive and home appliance sectors on the regional economy. They also reviewed response strategies of domestic finished vehicle companies and discussed countermeasures for local auto parts companies.

Based on the discussions, the city plans to form a support team led by the Vice Mayor of Culture and Economy and to fully implement a proactive and comprehensive management system for the export industry, focusing on the home appliance and automotive sectors, which have a relatively high proportion of exports to the United States. The support team will visit local conglomerates and their partners to hear about on-site difficulties and will promote measures to resolve export challenges caused by tariff imposition and exchange rate fluctuations.

Mayor Kang Gijung stated, "I believe that when a crisis comes, an opportunity always follows," and added, "We will provide full support so that our export companies, especially in the automotive and home appliance industries, can overcome this crisis through the thorough consideration of all members of the regional industry in response to the Trump 2.0 direction."
