"Finding Hobbies Beyond Shopping... Positive Changes"

American women are adopting a lifestyle that minimizes consumption due to the economic recession and soaring prices.

On the 2nd (local time), CNN reported that the 'No Buy 2025 Challenge' is trending among Americans, especially women. The 'No Buy' challenge refers to a consumption behavior where people do not purchase anything until they have used up all the products they already own, except for essentials.

Former U.S. President Donald Trump promised during a press conference in August last year, ahead of the presidential election, that "if I win the election, I will immediately lower prices." However, according to the U.S. economic research organization Conference Board, consumer confidence has declined for two consecutive months. This indicates that Americans have negative feelings about the ongoing inflation. In fact, grocery prices are rising again, with eggs and coffee prices approaching record highs.

Amid this trend, Americans are reducing all consumption except for essential items. Riley Markham, a housewife living in Florida, joined the No Buy challenge with her family aiming to save money. They avoid visiting restaurants and movie theaters except for special occasions. Instead, they utilize free facilities such as parks and libraries, saving about $100 (140,000 KRW) per week. Sabrina Pare, who lives in Detroit, also joined the challenge after having her first child. She emphasized, "Prices will get even higher in the future," adding, "It is important to reduce consumption and develop the habit of using what you already have."

Especially, the younger generation appears to be more sensitive to this lifestyle. Rebecca Soden (27), who lives in California, said she saved thousands of dollars by reducing consumption through the challenge. She said, "I am saving to live with my British husband in the same place," adding, "I saved over $4,000 (5.83 million KRW) by creating content as a side job. The Trump administration has fueled my passion." Patience Kill, who lives in southern Florida, also explained, "I have saved $300 so far," and described the positive change of finding hobbies other than shopping. She added, "Going to stores is not everything in life. Taking walks under the sun has helped me reduce shopping."
