National Heritage Promotion Service Renovates and Opens Angkor Wat Viewing Facilities

New Stairs Installed and Pond Viewing Path Created

The Cultural Heritage Administration and the National Heritage Promotion Agency announced on the 31st that they have renovated the Angkor Wat viewing facilities in Cambodia and opened them on the 22nd. The stairs leading to the three-story Bakan Tower in the northeast were relocated to the southeast, and a viewing path was created around the southern pond.

The newly installed stairs are made of steel structures, providing a safe and convenient viewing environment. The pond viewing path helps prevent damage to the Angkor ruins. A representative from the Promotion Agency explained, "Due to the large number of visitors, the sand on the ground has been eroded, raising concerns about damage to the ruins."

The Promotion Agency is working with the Cambodian APSARA Authority to carry out restoration and maintenance of the Bakan base of Angkor Wat until 2026. They are establishing the APSARA Authority Conservation Science Center and developing Angkor Wat ruins as a tourism resource.

Korea has been involved in Cambodia's national heritage ODA projects since 2015. During this time, they have restored and maintained the Preah Pithu temple complex and the Elephant Terrace.

The Preah Pithu temple complex is a collection of Hindu and Buddhist style temples built in the 12th to 13th centuries. It is located northeast of Angkor Thom, the former capital of the Khmer Empire. The Elephant Terrace is a structure located in front of the Angkor Thom royal palace, extending lengthwise in a north-south direction. It was used for official ceremonies, similar to the Woldae (raised platform) in Korean palaces.
