Hong Seongpyo, the chairman of the Asan City Council in South Chungcheong Province, announced on the 23rd that he has withdrawn from the Democratic Party of Korea.
Hong stated, "I sincerely apologize for causing deep disappointment and concern to the citizens due to my inappropriate behavior," and added, "My words and actions have brought great trouble to the citizens and the city council."
He went on to mention that the resignation motion he submitted was rejected at the 254th temporary session held earlier that morning, and said, "As of today, I have resubmitted my resignation letter and relinquished my party membership."
He also appealed to his fellow council members, saying, "I hope you will schedule a plenary session as soon as possible and pass my resignation motion," and requested, "Please elect a new chairman to normalize the city council."
Meanwhile, Hong recently caused controversy by attending his alma mater's graduation ceremony while under the influence of alcohol.
On the 14th, he said, "I fully accept responsibility," and submitted his resignation letter to the council's secretariat.
