Expanding the Existing 9km Section from Two Lanes to Four Lanes with an Investment of 88.5 Billion KRW
Gongju City, Chungnam Province, announced on the 23rd that the expansion and construction project for the National Road No. 39 segment from Sinyeong to Munggeum in Yugueup has been selected as a candidate for the preliminary feasibility study by the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport.
According to the city, the expansion and construction project for the National Road No. 39 Sinyeong~Munggeum segment in Yugu has been included in the Ministry's '6th National Road and National Support Road Construction Five-Year Comprehensive Plan.'
The project aims to invest a total of 88.5 billion KRW to expand the existing 9km two-lane section into four lanes.
Additionally, the project to expand the 6.9km two-lane section from Songak Geosan to Yugok into four lanes has also been selected as a candidate for the preliminary feasibility study, so a total of 15.9km from Gongju Yugu to Asan Songak will be expanded to four lanes.
This section has frequently experienced traffic congestion due to increased traffic demand between Dangjin and Yeongdeok Expressway users and between Asan and Gongju.
The city expects that the road expansion project will greatly contribute to alleviating traffic congestion and improving safety.
Mayor Choi Woncheol has continuously consulted with government ministries, Chungnam Province, and local political circles since taking office to persuade them of the project's feasibility, as it is the most pressing issue in Yugueup for the past 20 years.
In particular, when Minister of Land, Infrastructure and Transport Won Heeryong visited Gongju in 2023, Mayor Choi explained the necessity and urgency of the road expansion, which led to its selection as a candidate for the preliminary feasibility study.
This project is awaiting the preliminary feasibility study by the Ministry of Economy and Finance, and it is expected that a decision on whether to proceed with the project will be made by the end of this year or early next year.
Mayor Choi stated, "Once the Sinyeong~Munggeum road expansion project in Yugu is implemented, it is expected to greatly contribute not only to smooth traffic flow but also to balanced regional development," and added, "We will do our utmost to swiftly pass the final hurdle of the preliminary feasibility study."
