People Power Party: "Resignation Letter Submitted for Show"
Democratic Party: "People Power Party Suddenly Voted Against the Motion"
Asan City Council Chairman Hong Seongpyo is speaking at the 254th extraordinary session on the 23rd.
After the motion to process the resignation of Hong Seongpyo, the chairman of the Asan City Council in South Chungcheong Province, was rejected on the 23rd, both the People Power Party and the Democratic Party of Korea issued statements.
After the rejection, Chairman Hong said, "I requested the processing of my resignation letter, but it was rejected," and added, "I will resubmit my resignation letter as of today. I hope the People Power Party council members will put citizens before the party and join me."
Earlier, the city council held its 254th extraordinary session on this day, planning to vote on the resignation of Chairman Hong, who caused controversy by attending his alma mater's graduation ceremony while intoxicated, and then elect a new chairman. However, the motion was rejected with 7 votes in favor and 9 against.
Immediately after the recess, People Power Party council members issued a statement claiming, "Chairman Hong submitted his resignation as a show, and the Democratic Party is abusing its power by forcibly convening the steering committee."
Democratic Party council members also immediately released a statement, countering, "The People Power Party, which had been urging Chairman Hong to resign, suddenly voted against the motion, resorting to despicable and shallow political tricks."
The South Chungcheong Provincial branch of the Democratic Party also issued an additional statement, criticizing, "The People Power Party is driving the city council into a vortex of confusion while the mayor's seat remains vacant."
In response, People Power Party council members once again issued a statement, urging, "The Democratic Party should stop manipulating public opinion to shift responsibility onto the People Power Party by exploiting the weakness of the anonymous vote and exercise restraint."
Meanwhile, the disciplinary request against Chairman Hong was referred to the Special Ethics Committee prior to the resignation vote on this day.
