Lunar New Year's Day, which marks the beginning of the year, falls on the first day of the first lunar month. It is both the very first day of the new year and the first major holiday of the year. Especially this year, thanks to the designation of substitute holidays, you can enjoy a sweet nine-day break from January 25th to February 2nd (if you take one day off on Friday). For those worn out by daily life, it's a rare chance to find some leisure.

However, it is unfortunate that, amid national crises such as martial law, people's finances are worse than ever. The thick envelopes of New Year's money traditionally exchanged between parents, relatives, and nephews will likely be much thinner this year. Still, there's no need to be depressed. You can simply travel to Gwangju and Jeonnam, which are blessed with breathtaking natural scenery and offer a variety of sights and activities. The sea, forests, and southern cuisine will soothe your weary heart.

◇ Finding Emotion by the Sea

The charm of the sea lies in the sense of openness and refreshment it brings. But the seas of Jeonnam offer even more, with a variety of attractions and stories. In other words, you can also experience fun and excitement.

This is why Mokpo Peace Square is a must-visit destination. Mokpo Peace Square features a unique urban seaside park spanning over 20,000 square meters. Garland lights installed along a 300-meter stretch illuminate the coastal promenade, creating a dreamlike beauty. With many charming cafes lined up, you can also enjoy a relaxing cup of coffee.

Haenam Uisuyoung Tourist Site, which holds the memory of the Myeongnyang Naval Battle where 13 ships defeated 133 Japanese warships, is also recommended for those who want to enjoy the winter sea. This is where Uldolmok, famous for its strong currents, is located. The sight of the sea swirling rapidly as it meets the currents is truly spectacular. The so-called Skywalk, which extends into the middle of Uldolmok, offers a thrilling experience. For children, it can also serve as a living history lesson.

For those seeking quiet relaxation, Muan Jogeumnaru is another option. With a 4km stretch of silver sand beach and lush pine forest, Jogeumnaru is a tranquil retreat. Standing in the winter sea breeze and sunlight filtering through the pine forest, you may feel your troubled mind being washed away.

Consider spending a night at Hyangiram in Yeosu, where the sea meets the sky. The beautiful sunrise at Hyangiram needs no further explanation. In addition, the massive cliffs stretching toward the sea are another sight to behold. The view of the Dadohae archipelago resembles an Oriental painting.

Other must-visit winter sea destinations in Jeonnam include Sinan Aphaedo Bonsai Park, Jindo Sebang Sunset, Muan Doripo, and Yeosu Yi Sunshin Square (Marine Park).

◇ Jeonnam's Famous Mountains Filled with the Scent of Trees

Wolchulsan in Yeongam, known as the Geumgangsan of Honam, is highly recommended for a visit during this Lunar New Year holiday. Centered around Cheonhwangbong Peak at 809 meters above sea level, the steep cliffs of Gujeongbong and Sajabong create a breathtaking landscape. Although it is sometimes misunderstood as a "rough mountain," the snowy view from Wolchulsan Cloud Bridge is truly awe-inspiring.

Jangheung Cypress Forest Woodland, with its vast 2.6 million square meters of dense cypress forest, is perfect for families. Even in winter, it offers well-equipped health facilities such as indoor foot baths and aroma therapy rooms to help you escape the cold winter wind.

Jirisan, the mountain closest to the sky in Jeonnam, is home to Nogodan, the ultimate winter snow scene. Located at 1,507 meters, Nogodan is one of the three main peaks of Jirisan, along with Cheonwangbong and Banyabong. In front lies the wide fields of Gurye, and behind flows the Seomjingang River. The white snow flowers settled on the tree branches create an exotic, almost Alpine atmosphere.

◇ Great Spots for a Stroll

In the middle of the long holiday, it may be nice to find some peace by taking a quiet walk.

Boseong, the largest green tea-producing region in Korea, boasts tea fields covering 5.3 million square meters. The lush greenery looks like a carpet and feels both serene and refreshing. Walking among the tea fields, you may feel as if spring has already arrived by your side.

Suncheon Naganeupseong, where you can enjoy a time travel experience to the Joseon Dynasty while strolling, is also worth a visit. Walking through the alleys between 108 thatched and tiled houses surrounded by fortress walls, you can reflect on the lives of your ancestors.

Find healing time at Gwangyang Baealdo Island Garden, where the Seomjingang River, Mangdeok Port, and Hadong land unfold before you. Baealdo, shaped as if bowing toward Mangdeoksan, is connected to the land and sea by the Star Bridge and Sunrise Bridge. At sunset, the distant lights of Yi Sunshin Bridge add to the atmosphere.

Suncheonman National Garden is a highlight of any trip to Jeonnam. Along the walking paths, you can find gardens representing the traditions and beauty of more than ten countries, offering both fun and visual delight. In addition, with themed areas such as Suncheon Lake Garden, National Garden Botanical Garden, and Stream Path, there is no time to be bored.

In addition, Haenamsan Garden is also a great place to make memories. Under the beautiful natural scenery of Haenam, art and culture coexist.

◇ Jeonnam, the Number One Destination for Food

Jeonnam, renowned for its cuisine, is truly a food paradise. A bite of Yeosu's winter saejogae shabu-shabu will warm you to the core.

Dasulgi sujebi, a signature dish from Gurye, is sure to satisfy any gourmet's palate.

The sharp and tangy taste of Yeongsanpo hongeo and the galnaktang (a stew made with ribs and octopus) from Yeongam, a local specialty, will give you the strength to endure the cold winter.

It's also worth diving into the world of Naju gomtang, known as a paradise for lovers of traditional Korean soups. The deeply simmered meat broth and the repeated pouring and draining process make Naju gomtang the epitome of soup.

In addition, cockle bibimbap packed with Beolgyo cockles, maesaengiguk (seaweed soup) made with seaweed from the pristine sea, and Jangheung grilled oysters, considered the pinnacle of winter gourmet cuisine, are all irresistible.
