To implement this, the city issued a legislative notice for the “Mokpo City Basic Birth Allowance Payment Ordinance” on the 23rd and allocated a project budget of 590 million KRW in the upcoming March supplementary budget. After city council deliberation, payments will begin in April. Allowances not paid for January to March this year will be paid retroactively, and thereafter, 200,000 KRW will be provided each month.

Initially, the city considered providing 50,000 KRW per month due to financial constraints, but decided to increase the amount to 100,000 KRW monthly to further encourage childbirth and alleviate the economic burden on parents that continues through the child-rearing and school-age periods.

The Jeollanam-do and Mokpo City basic birth allowance will be provided to children born in 2024 or later, from age 1 to 18, and is expected to offer substantial support not only during early childcare but also throughout the school years when household expenses are high.

Eligible recipients must have both the newborn and their guardian continuously registered as residents in Jeollanam-do from the date of birth registration, and at least one of them must reside in Mokpo City as of the application date.

A city official stated, “Guardians of the newborn, such as parents, can apply from one month prior to the child’s first birthday. Applications can be submitted in person at the administrative welfare center where the newborn is registered or online via the Government24 website.”
