Trump on Biden's Preemptive Pardons: "It's Funny, or Sad, That He Didn't Pardon Himself"

On January 22 (local time), U.S. President Donald Trump commented on former President Joe Biden's preemptive pardons of his family members and others right before leaving office, saying, "The funny thing, or perhaps the sad thing, is that he didn't pardon himself."

In an interview with Fox News that day, President Trump said, "If you look at the reasons for those pardons, they're all related to Biden."

Just before leaving office on January 20, President Biden preemptively pardoned not only Liz Cheney, a former House representative labeled as anti-Trump within the Republican Party, and Mark Milley, former Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, but also his own brother and his sister's husband and wife.

In response, President Trump criticized, "Biden is pardoning everyone." He also mentioned that when asked whether he would pardon himself or his associates at the end of his first term, he responded at the time, "I will not pardon anyone. We did nothing wrong."

He added, "But those incredibly patriotic people suffered," referring to his close associates such as former White House chief strategist Stephen Bannon and White House trade and manufacturing adviser Peter Navarro, who served prison sentences.

In 2023, Trump also stated, "I will appoint a real special counsel to go after Joe Biden, the most corrupt president in American history, and the entire Biden crime family."
