Let us take a look at the effects of the employment policy that Gumi City has devoted great effort to and the future direction of Gumi City's employment policy.
According to employment administration statistics, as of November 2024, the number of employment insurance subscribers in Gumi City was 111,963, an increase of 1.28% compared to the same month last year, while the number of unemployment benefit recipients was 5,352, a decrease of 0.74%. This demonstrates the effectiveness of Gumi City's job policies.
◆ Job support projects for the unemployed within the region
Through public job projects (public work projects, community job projects), Gumi City provided direct employment to 306 people with a budget of 1.9 billion KRW throughout 2024, supporting their entry into economic activities. In addition, free vocational training courses for the unemployed were operated, with 40 people completing courses for beauticians and caregivers, and plans to expand courses to barista, baking, and confectionery in 2025.
The Gumi City Employment Support Center provided employment counseling and linkage services to 3,607 job seekers, resulting in 1,131 successful employments. In particular, through the Chunha Chudong Employment Festival, 80 local companies participated, and 109 job seekers were hired, contributing to alleviating the manpower shortage of local small and medium-sized enterprises.
◆ Promotion of new middle-aged projects responding to accelerated aging and demographic changes
Gumi City also expanded projects to help the economic independence of the new middle-aged generation in response to aging and demographic changes. The 'New Middle-aged Social Contribution Project,' which matched 167 retired professionals with 16 social welfare facilities and other institutions, provided opportunities for the new middle-aged generation to contribute to the local community by utilizing their expertise.
Furthermore, through the 'New Middle-aged SME and Small Business Employment Support Project,' selected in the Gyeongsangbuk-do job contest, a total project budget of 160 million KRW was used to support wages for up to six months for 43 new middle-aged people employed by SMEs and small businesses. This contributed not only to the livelihood stability and job creation of the new middle-aged generation but also to alleviating the recruitment difficulties of local companies.
◆ Enhancing corporate competitiveness and hiring local talent through corporate support
In August last year, the 'Gumi Win-Win Job Cooperation Center' was opened, achieving results such as increased sales, two patent applications, and supplying LG Energy Solution by providing technology development support to 10 secondary battery-related companies.
In particular, LG-HY BCM Co., Ltd., a 'Gumi-type job' win-win company, has contributed to revitalizing the local economy through steady job creation since its full-scale operation began in 2024. Along with this, it continues win-win cooperation with the local community through scholarship payments and financial support via ESG funds.
◆ Securing 960 million KRW in national and provincial funds through selection in job support contest projects
Gumi City was selected for three job support contest projects in 2024, securing a total of 960 million KRW in national and provincial funds. Among these, the local-led investment job demand-tailored support project supported 17 companies in the technology development field with a project budget of 1.2 billion KRW and selected five companies for certification evaluation to strengthen competitiveness.
Additionally, through the R&D project-based professional research talent development project, with a project budget of 200 million KRW, 11 new science and engineering personnel were matched as corporate research managers, and corporate adaptation training and projects were operated. This achieved results in helping new personnel settle stably in local companies.
Kim Jang-ho, mayor of Gumi City, said, “Job creation is a core task not only for individuals' lives but also for the stable development of society and the economy,” adding, “We will continue to do our best to create sustainable and quality jobs to prevent the outflow of local talent and revitalize the local economy.”
