Bangong Cheongnyeondan Considers Changing the Name 'Baekgoldan'
Baekgoldan Symbolizes Suppression of Democratization Movements in the 1980s
Group Expresses Intent to Continue Activities Despite Naming Controversy
The conservative group 'Bangong Cheongnyeondan,' which has been holding rallies to defend President Yoon Suk-yeol's official residence, announced that it is considering changing the controversial name 'Baekgoldan.'
Kim Jeong-hyun, the leader of Bangong Cheongnyeondan, stated in a Telegram notice on the 10th, "There have been suggestions from some members about changing the name, and it is currently under internal review." He added, "Considering the context in which the name Baekgoldan emerged despite the controversy, there may be some understandable aspects. Baekgoldan was a special unit tasked with the initial suppression of past insurrection provocations, and its necessity for social stability cannot be denied."
Baekgoldan was an undercover police riot squad that suppressed democratization movements in the 1980s and 1990s. It was notorious for its violent arrest methods at the time. Due to this historical background, the issue sparked controversy not only among progressive groups but also within conservative-leaning online communities and some conservative organizations hosting rallies supporting President Yoon Suk-yeol.
Kim said, "Regardless of whether the name is changed, activities will continue," and added, "We are discussing activity plans and will hold an official launch ceremony once decisions are made." Meanwhile, the planned lineup protest in front of the official residence following the National Assembly launch press conference on the 9th was canceled. Amid the controversy, the number of Baekgoldan executives and members reportedly decreased from about 80 initially to the 50s currently.
