Expressing Thoughts on the Attempt to Execute the Warrant

The High-ranking Officials' Crime Investigation Unit (Gong-su-cheo) attempted to execute an arrest warrant for President Yoon Seok-yeol but ultimately gave up, while singer JK Kim Dong-wook expressed his thoughts.

On the 3rd, JK Kim Dong-wook posted a photo of the Taegeukgi flag with the phrase "Protecting the president is the way to protect the country. Gong-su-cheo who?" on his social media account. This is interpreted as his opinion on Gong-su-cheo's attempt to execute the arrest warrant for President Yoon on that day.

Meanwhile, Gong-su-cheo announced, "We have started executing the arrest warrant for President Yoon," and around 6:14 a.m., they departed the Government Complex Gwacheon after boarding five vehicles. Due to traffic congestion and other factors, they arrived around 7:24 a.m. in front of the presidential residence in Hannam-dong, Yongsan-gu, Seoul, but after a standoff with the Security Office, they ultimately gave up on the execution. They explained, "Due to the continued standoff, we judged that it was practically impossible to execute the arrest warrant, and concerns for the safety of personnel on site due to obstruction led us to stop the execution." They also expressed "deep regret over the attitude of the suspect, President Yoon, who did not comply with the legal procedures," adding, "Future measures will be decided after review."

In a statement released to reporters, Yoon Seok-yeol’s legal team, represented by lawyer Yoon Gap-geun, claimed, "If Gong-su-cheo executed an unconstitutional and illegal warrant with police cooperation, it constitutes the criminal act of illegal arrest under Article 124 of the Criminal Act." They also stated, "There is no precedent in world constitutional history where a 'president' has been punished for exercising 'national emergency powers' such as martial law for treason," and added, "The warrant request and issuance by Gong-su-cheo, which lacks jurisdiction over treason investigations, is null and void, and executing it is also illegal." Furthermore, they emphasized, "Excluding the application of Articles 110 and 111 of the Criminal Procedure Act was a judge’s decision to suspend the effect of the law, which is clearly a decision only the Constitutional Court can make; anything else falls within the legislative domain."

Earlier, on the 31st of last month, JK Kim Dong-wook also shared his thoughts regarding the Jeju Air passenger plane disaster.
