Expansion to Include 5·18 Democratic Merit Recipients and Their Families
Busan Gijang-gun will expand the support 대상 for the honorary veterans allowance starting January 2025 to enhance the practical respect and welfare of national veterans.
The county recently partially amended the "Ordinance on the Respect and Support for National Veterans, etc. in Gijang-gun, Busan Metropolitan City," significantly expanding the 대상 for the honorary veterans allowance from the current "national merit recipients, special mission merit recipients themselves and their families" to include "veterans eligible for compensation, May 18 Democratic Merit recipients themselves and their families."
Applications for the newly applicable honorary veterans allowance can be submitted from January 2, 2025, by preparing an application form, proof documents such as a certificate of merit confirmation, and a copy of the bankbook, and submitting them to the administrative welfare center of the relevant 읍·면 (eup/myeon) at the applicant's address.
However, applicants must have resided in Gijang-gun for more than one year as of the application date and be registered as residents. Those already receiving other honorary veterans allowances are not eligible for duplicate payments.
County Governor Jeong Jong-bok said, "It is a natural duty to strengthen the respect for national veterans in the region who sacrificed for the peace and freedom of the country," adding, "We will do our best to ensure that national veterans can lead honorable and stable lives."
Gijang-gun continues to make ongoing efforts to improve respect for national veterans and their families.
Starting July 2023, the participation honorary allowance for Vietnam War veterans was increased by 50,000 KRW to 200,000 KRW per month. In October of the same year, the honorary veterans allowance paid to national merit recipients, special mission merit recipients, and their families was increased from 50,000 KRW to 100,000 KRW per month. Additionally, from January 2024, the spouse allowance for deceased veterans will be supported at 50,000 KRW per month, the first among the 16 districts and counties of Busan. Gijang-gun also successfully held the National Defense Gratitude Festival and is promoting various support measures to repay the noble spirit of sacrifice of national veterans and improve the welfare of bereaved families.
