The public hearing was organized to gather opinions from various stakeholders including citizens, related experts, relevant departments, and environmental organizations prior to establishing the basic plan.

The basic plan disclosed at the public hearing considers the linkage with the national basic plan and Gyeonggi Province’s higher-level plans, reflecting regional characteristics as the role and responsibility of the region as a carbon neutrality implementation agent expands. It presents mid- to long-term greenhouse gas targets and sector- and year-specific implementation measures.

In the plan, Pyeongtaek City set a target to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 42.9% compared to 2018, aiming for 1,701,582 tons of emissions by 2030 in sectors under local government management authority such as buildings, transportation, agriculture and livestock, waste, and carbon sinks. To achieve this, the city is preparing five major strategic areas and 54 detailed project plans, including ▲eco-friendly transportation ▲zero-energy city ▲expansion of eco-friendly agriculture ▲energy recovery from waste resources ▲expansion of carbon sinks.

At the public hearing, Professor Kim Moon-il of Pyeongtaek University chaired the session and engaged in Q&A with discussants representing buildings, transportation, agriculture and livestock, waste, carbon sinks, and civil society.

The city plans to additionally collect citizens’ opinions through various methods such as visits and email until January 2 next year, and establish the basic plan by reflecting diverse views from civil society.

Jung Jang-seon, Mayor of Pyeongtaek City, said, "We will do our best to actively respond to climate change through cooperation among the public, private, and industrial sectors and realize the carbon neutrality goal to become a sustainable environmental city."
