On the 23rd, members of the Chungnam Provincial Council from the Democratic Party of Korea called for the resignation of Vice Chairperson Jung Gwangseop of the People Power Party, who attended an anti-impeachment rally organized by a conservative group.
It was reported that Vice Chairperson Jung attended the rally held in Gwanghwamun, Seoul on the 21st, which was organized by the Korean National Movement Headquarters for Correcting the Republic of Korea (Daegukbon) and the Free Unification Party, among others.
The Democratic Party council members from Chungnam stated, "This is an act of deceiving and betraying the residents who stayed awake all night out of concern for a second coup after the unimaginable state violence incident on the night of December 3rd," and demanded, "Vice Chairperson Jung should sincerely apologize to the residents and take responsibility by resigning from the council leadership."
They continued, "By attending the anti-impeachment rally organized by a conservative group, holding a picket, and even taking a certification photo, Vice Chairperson Jung has effectively declared himself an accomplice to insurrection," and criticized, "The excuse that he attended without knowing it was an anti-impeachment rally is utterly unconvincing. This is an irresponsible act, forgetting his role as the council's first vice chairperson representing the residents."
They further stated, "Are you saying that you oppose the suspension of President Yoon Sukyeol, the ringleader of the insurrection who ordered heavily armed soldiers to aim their guns at the representative body, and that you will not hold him accountable for his crimes?" and questioned, "As vice chairperson, do you agree with the unconstitutional content of Proclamation No. 1, which banned political activities of local councils during the insurrection? As a council member, are you supporting the suppression of local autonomy?"
They also pointed out, "By opposing the council's resolution condemning the declaration of martial law and leaving the chamber during a colleague's five-minute speech related to martial law, you have already forfeited your qualifications as vice chairperson."
They added, "We also demand that the People Power Party council members clearly state their position on the actions of their colleague and thoroughly discipline him," and emphasized, "Neglecting the inappropriate behavior of a fellow member is no different from siding with the insurrection ringleader Yoon Sukyeol and the 85 National Assembly members who ultimately betrayed the people."
