"7 Victims of Japanese Forced Mobilization Accept South Korea's 'Third-Party Compensation'"

Kyodo News Report

Seven victims of forced mobilization from the Joseon Women's Labor Corps during the Japanese colonial period have accepted the South Korean government's proposed 'third-party compensation' plan.

According to Kyodo News and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs on the 11th, the Foundation for Supporting Victims of Forced Mobilization under Japanese Rule paid the judgment amount and delayed interest to seven victims on the 9th. It is known that they received a compensation ruling from the Supreme Court for forced labor damages from 2023 to 2024.

The reason for receiving the judgment amount and delayed interest is that they accepted the third-party compensation solution announced by the South Korean government in March last year. Based on funds raised through private contributions by a foundation under the Ministry of the Interior and Safety, compensation and delayed interest are paid to victims with confirmed compensation rulings instead of Japanese companies.

The government has decided to pay compensation through the third-party compensation solution to victims who received confirmed damage compensation rulings in addition to those who received confirmed compensation rulings from the Supreme Court in 2018.

Lee Ja-sun, who accepted this, told Kyodo News, "The emotional burden has somewhat eased, but originally, Fujikoshi should have paid." She worked at the Fujikoshi factory in Toyama Prefecture, Japan, in 1944 while attending elementary school in Gunsan, Jeonbuk.
