Dong-A University Chemical Engineering Department Master’s Students Kim Doyeon and Jeong Siyun Receive Excellence in Presentation Award at International Conference

Participation in BK21 FOUR Project, 'Korean Institute of Chemical Engineers General Meeting & International Conference' and 'AFORE 2024'

Dong-A University (President Lee Hae-woo) announced on the 10th that master's students Kim Do-yeon and Jung Si-yoon from the Department of Chemical Engineering (BK21 FOUR) received consecutive awards for excellent presentations at international academic conferences.

Kim Do-yeon, a master's student belonging to the Department of Chemical Engineering’s ‘Separation Process and Clean Energy Laboratory (Advisor: Professor Sa Jeong-hoon)’ at Dong-A University, received the ‘Excellent Oral Presentation Award’ at the ‘Korean Institute of Chemical Engineers (KIChE) 2024 Fall General Meeting and International Conference,’ while Jung Si-yoon received the ‘Best Poster Award’ at the ‘Asia-Pacific Forum on Renewable Energy (AFORE) 2024.’

Kim Do-yeon was awarded at the ‘Thermodynamics Molecular Simulation Division’ of the KIChE International Conference recently held at BEXCO in Busan for the research titled ‘Minimizing the tetrahydrofuran concentration for CO2 + H2 hydrate formation to achieve immediate capture with enhanced separation efficiency.’

In this study, Kim confirmed that by minimizing the concentration of ‘THF (tetrahydrofuran),’ which is conventionally used as a hydrate formation promoter, it is possible to achieve significantly improved CO2 capture efficiency through a simple process.

He said, “This research is significant in that it presented the possibility of greatly improving efficiency while simplifying the hydrate-based CO2 capture process. I hope this study will contribute to the commercialization of HBGS (Hydrate-Based Gas Separation) technology, and I will continue to deepen hydrate research and devote myself to developing practical technologies that can respond to climate change and realize carbon neutrality.”

Jung Si-yoon received an award for the research titled ‘Experimental Study on CO2 sequestration in the form of clathrate hydrates in the deep-sea environment of the East Sea of Korea’ at the ‘Gas Hydrate Division’ of AFORE 2024, held recently at the Ramada Plaza Jeju Hotel.

In this study, Jung confirmed the possibility of large-scale storage and sequestration of CO2 in the form of clathrate hydrates in the actual deep-sea environment of the East Sea.

He said, “I am grateful to my advisor who gave me much guidance during the research process. I will continue to conduct research to enhance the stability of CO2 ocean storage with responsibility and strive to contribute to the development of related fields.”
