'LG EnSol-GM' Ultium Cells, Producing 100 Million Battery Cells in Just 2 Years of Operation

LG Energy Solution and the joint venture with American automaker General Motors (GM), Ultium Cells, have produced their 100 millionth battery cell. If 100 million battery cells were placed in a row, the length would be equivalent to about one and a half times the circumference of the Earth.

On the 5th (local time), LG Energy Solution announced on the 6th that a ceremony was held at Ultium Cells Plant 1 in Warren, Ohio, attended by GM and United Auto Workers (UAW) officials from Michigan, as well as employees, to commemorate the production of the 100 millionth battery cell and to thank the employees for their hard work. The day also held special significance as it was the same day, December 5th, five years ago in 2019, when the joint venture was announced.

Ultium Cells Plant 1, which began construction in May 2020, started producing battery cells in August 2022 and reached 100 million cells in just 2 years and 4 months. The plant covers an area of 2.8 million square feet (approximately 260,000㎡), equivalent to the size of 30 American football fields. Currently, about 2,200 employees are working there.

The battery cells produced at Ultium Cells are pouch-type and use the latest NCMA (Nickel-Cobalt-Manganese-Aluminum) technology, offering longer driving ranges and lower costs. These cells are supplied to GM electric vehicle assembly plants across North America.

Ultium Cells Plant 1 also contributes to the local community in various ways. In cooperation with the Ohio Department of Natural Resources, it has restored 172 acres of wildlife habitat and is engaged in Habitat for Humanity and community development activities. It supports education and mentoring for underprivileged youth and has donated over $35,000 to a breast cancer treatment center through community service activities.

Dongmyung Kim, CEO of LG Energy Solution, stated, "This achievement at Ultium Cells, our joint venture with GM, demonstrates our commitment to accelerating the transition to clean energy across various industries, from electric vehicles (EVs) to energy storage system (ESS) solutions." He added, "We will do our best to expand electrification and create jobs in Ohio."

Jensen Peter Clausen, GM Vice President of Global Manufacturing, said, "The work being done at Ultium Cells Warren plant is very important for the future of transportation and the automotive industry." He emphasized, "Based on the achievements of the Ultium Cells joint plant, which combines technology, manufacturing processes, and outstanding talent, we will expand our technical partnership and cooperation with LG Energy Solution, including the joint development of prismatic batteries."

Josh Ayers, local UAW president, said, "Ultium Cells Plant 1 is creating important jobs in Warren and the Mahoning Valley region." He added, "This achievement is an opportunity to prove our manufacturing capabilities, and we look forward to achieving more results with good wages, benefits, and community support."
