Joint Inspection Conducted with Haeyang Susan Cheong... 16 Administrative Actions Taken
The West Sea Regional Coast Guard Agency (Chief Lee Myung-jun) announced on the 3rd that it conducted unannounced inspections on two ferry cargo ships over 2000 tons to prevent marine accidents during the winter season of adverse weather conditions.
Due to the nature of ferry cargo ships operating mainly at night and early morning, crew fatigue is high, increasing the likelihood of major marine accidents caused by inattentiveness. Therefore, the West Sea Coast Guard Agency, in cooperation with the Marine Affairs and Fisheries Agency, carried out unannounced inspections.

The Coast Guard and the Marine Affairs Agency inspected safety management areas such as hull condition and cargo overloading, proper disposal of pollutants like oil and sewage, operation status of marine pollution prevention equipment, and management of various documents, resulting in a total of 16 administrative guidance actions. The detailed contents include 7 on-site corrections such as updating the list of containment materials in the ship and marine pollution emergency plan and insufficient oil record book entries, and 9 recommendations for improvements such as repairing life-saving equipment and operating with fire doors inside the ship closed at all times.
A representative of the West Sea Regional Coast Guard Agency stated, “To proactively prevent marine accidents, we plan to continuously supervise and guide not only ferry cargo ships but also other vessels. We hope that marine workers and related companies will establish a culture of self-inspection of ship equipment to maintain clean seas and prevent marine safety accidents.”
