A rehabilitation court is expected to be established in Gwangju in 2026.
On the 28th, the National Assembly passed the "Partial Amendment to the Act on the Establishment and Jurisdiction of Courts of Various Levels," which includes the establishment of rehabilitation courts in Gwangju, Daejeon, and Daegu.
The amendment includes the establishment of a rehabilitation court in Gwangju in March 2026. Since the Gwangju District Court constructed an annex to the main government building last December, there appears to be no issue with housing the rehabilitation court.
Rehabilitation courts handle only insolvency cases, so judges have high expertise and can process cases quickly. The legal community expects that once the rehabilitation court is established, local businesses and residents will be able to receive judicial services related to insolvency cases in a timely manner.
Meanwhile, the number of insolvency cases filed at the Gwangju High Court’s subordinate courts in Gwangju, Jeonju, and Jeju increased from an annual average of about 16,000 cases between 2016 and 2022 to 18,000 cases in 2023. Among these, the Gwangju District Court received about 9,700 cases last year.
