Scheduled to Submit Reappointment Review on the 2nd of Next Month
If Passed, Will Compete Against Former Coach Heo Jeong-moo
Chung Mong-gyu, the president of the Korea Football Association, has decided to run for a fourth term.
On the 28th, Yonhap News reported that President Chung made this decision and plans to submit his reappointment review documents to the Korea Sports Council's Sports Fairness Committee (hereinafter 'Fairness Committee') on December 2nd. To run for the next president, a resignation letter must be submitted at least 50 days before the start of the term. On the same day, President Chung plans to submit the reappointment review documents to the Sports Council's Fairness Committee and simultaneously submit a letter of intent to register as a candidate to the Football Association. A Football Association official told Yonhap News, "President Chung decided to submit the relevant documents to the Sports Council's Fairness Committee on December 2nd to request a reappointment review," adding, "Along with submitting the reappointment review documents, he also plans to submit his resignation letter from the current presidency to the Football Association."
Having first taken office as the president of the Football Association 11 years ago in 2013 and serving three consecutive terms, President Chung has decided after much deliberation to challenge for a fourth term. Prior to President Chung, former national football team coach Huh Jung-moo declared his candidacy for the presidential election on the 18th. If the Sports Council's Fairness Committee permits President Chung's bid for reappointment, the next Korea Football Association presidential election will be contested between President Chung and former coach Huh.
To run for the next president, a resignation letter must be submitted at least 50 days before the term start date, and December 2nd is exactly 50 days before the next president's term begins on January 29, 2025. For President Chung to run for a fourth term, he must first pass the review by the Sports Council's Fairness Committee. According to the Sports Council's bylaws, to be eligible for more than three consecutive terms, candidates must meet one of the following criteria: ▲ having executive experience in international sports organizations when such experience is required, or ▲ having clear contributions based on quantifiable indicators such as financial contributions, performance in major international competitions, and organizational evaluations. If President Chung passes the Fairness Committee's review, he is expected to share his reflections on the past term and his aspirations for the fourth term around December 25-27.
The Korea Football Association presidential election will be held on January 8 next year. According to Article 23-2, Paragraph 2 of the Football Association's bylaws regarding 'candidate registration for the presidential election,' only those under the age of 70 on the election day are eligible to run. President Chung was born in 1962, and former coach Huh, born on January 13, 1955, will hold the election five days before his 70th birthday. Therefore, neither candidate violates the association's age limit of under 70 years. The election management committee will be formed by December 12, and the candidate registration period will be three days starting from December 25.
