Approval of Basic Plan Change for Hwaseong Dongtan Tram... Project on Track

Basic Design Bidding in First Half of Next Year... Target Opening in 2028
Mayor Jeong: "Will Proceed Without Delay to Ensure Citizens' Mobility Rights"

The Dongtan Urban Railway Construction Project (Dongtan Tram) promoted by Hwaseong City, Gyeonggi Province, is getting on track. With the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport's approval of the basic plan change, the city reaffirmed its commitment to smoothly advance the project aiming for opening in 2028.

Hwaseong City announced on the 28th that it recently received approval from the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport for the change in the basic plan of the Dongtan Tram construction project.

The Dongtan Tram is a project jointly promoted by Hwaseong City, Suwon City, and Osan City as part of the Dongtan 2 New Town metropolitan traffic improvement measures, targeting opening in 2028. The tram consists of two lines: ▲ Mangpo Station ~ Dongtan Station ~ Osan Station (16.58 km) ▲ Byeongjeom Station ~ Dongtan Station ~ Vehicle Depot (17.82 km), with a total length of 34.4 km. The lines will include 36 stations and one vehicle depot.

The revised basic plan includes changing from simultaneous implementation of all sections to phased project implementation. This reflects some variability in the project for the Osan City section of the tram, specifically the 2.85 km segment between Osan Unamtteul AI City ~ Osan Police Station ~ Osan City Hall ~ Osan Station. The total project cost increased from the original 977.1 billion KRW to 998.1 billion KRW, and the project length extended from 34.2 km to 34.4 km.

The revised plan also involves making the entire route above ground and partially adjusting the locations of stations such as S01, 107, and 201 to improve accessibility and convenience for traffic transfers, according to the city.

In particular, the vehicle power supply method was changed from a battery-only system to a hybrid system combining battery and supercapacitor with rapid charging available at each station. By adopting the hybrid system, battery charging time is shortened, reducing the number of vehicle sets from the original 39 to 34, the city added.

The city plans to promptly proceed with follow-up procedures following the approval of the basic plan change and issue a bid for the basic design using a technical proposal method in the first half of next year.

Jung Myung-geun, mayor of Hwaseong City, said, "The Dongtan Tram is a key link connecting Hwaseong City's metropolitan transportation network centered on Dongtan Station. We will strive to expedite the Dongtan Tram project to guarantee citizens' mobility rights and establish a safe, convenient, and eco-friendly transportation system."
