Bloomberg News reported this on the 20th (local time), citing a filing submitted by OpenAI to the U.S. Internal Revenue Service. This amount is slightly higher than the $73,546 Altman received in 2022. Altman previously stated that he receives a salary based on the minimum health insurance amount. He also repeatedly emphasized that he does not hold any equity stake in OpenAI. However, Bloomberg previously reported that OpenAI discussed the possibility of granting Altman equity if the company transitions to a for-profit entity.

The disclosed salary for 2023 comes at a time when OpenAI's generative artificial intelligence (AI), ChatGPT, sparked an AI boom, and the OpenAI board attempted to oust CEO Altman. Emmett Shear, founder of Twitch, who briefly served as interim CEO immediately after Altman’s dismissal in November last year, received a total salary of $3,720 from OpenAI. Although his tenure was publicly known to be about three days, the documents show he was paid as CEO from November 19 to 29, including weekends, at a rate of approximately $338.18 per day.

Ilya Sutskever, former chief scientist and co-founder who led the effort to remove Altman, received $322,201 from OpenAI last year. Sutskever left OpenAI in May this year. Bloomberg noted that "some executives’ total compensation may be much higher," pointing out that the filing did not include stock options or other equity-based compensation. Additionally, external investments that could affect this were not clearly disclosed.
