The Mountain Gate of Osan Doksanseong Has Been Greatly Expanded

Width expanded from 2.94 to 4.5m... Easier fire response
Mayor I Gwonjae: "Will enhance value as Osan's representative attraction"

The representative cultural heritage of Osan City, Gyeonggi Province, Doksanseong Fortress and the mountain gate (Sanmun) at the entrance of Sema Site have revealed a new appearance after reconstruction work was completed.

Osan City announced on the 19th that it held a completion ceremony for the reconstruction project of the Doksanseong mountain gate on the afternoon of the 18th. Doksanseong Fortress is a fortress from the Three Kingdoms period located in Jigot-dong, Osan City, along with the Sema Site. In December 1592, during the Imjin War, General Kwon Yul led about 20,000 soldiers from Jeolla Province to station here, defeating tens of thousands of Japanese troops and defending the fortress, thereby blocking the enemy’s advance.

This project involved dismantling and expanding the existing mountain gate that marks the entrance to the nationally designated cultural heritage sites of Doksanseong Fortress, Sema Site, and the traditional temple Bojeoksa, and rebuilding it. The passageway width of the mountain gate installed in 2003 was only 2.94 meters, making vehicle passage difficult and hindering fire truck access in case of fire. For this reason, since taking office, Mayor Lee Gwon-jae of the 8th civil administration has promoted the mountain gate reconstruction project as a major initiative.

In particular, during the project implementation process, the city secured a special adjustment grant of 560 million KRW through consultations with the Gyeonggi Provincial Council’s People Power Party and Gyeonggi Province, and proceeded with the reconstruction work. Through the reconstruction, the spacing between the pillars of the mountain gate was widened to 4.5 meters, and the clearance height increased from 2.9 meters to 4 meters.

The completion ceremony was attended by Mayor Lee Gwon-jae of Osan, Chairman Lee Sang-bok of the Osan City Council and city council members, Monk Jeong Ho (President of the Osan Buddhist Temple Association), Monk Seong Do (Head Monk of Bojeoksa Temple), Fire Chief Jeong Chan-young of Osan Fire Station, Director Jeong Jin-heung of Osan Cultural Center, and about 100 citizens.

In his commemorative speech, Mayor Lee said, "Doksanseong Fortress and Sema Site are valuable assets connected to the 17 km Osaek Dullegil Trail," adding, "By creating a lakeside park at Seorang Reservoir and linking it, we will enhance its value to become a representative attraction of Osan."
