Violation of the Fishing Vessel Safety Operation Act... Administrative Sanctions
The West Sea Regional Coast Guard Agency (Chief Lee Myung-jun) has caught four fishing vessels violating the Fishing Vessel Safety Operation Act for engaging in reckless fishing despite the issuance of a storm warning and dangerous high waves.
According to the West Sea Coast Guard on the 19th, a storm warning had been in effect across the entire southern West Sea from the 17th until midnight of the same day. Fishing vessels are restricted from departing when weather warnings are announced or in effect. Additionally, vessels engaged in fishing or navigation must move to safe waters and comply with evacuation orders and other safety measures.

The vessels caught this time departed on the afternoon and night of the 18th from Gunsan Sinshido Port in Jeonbuk and near Amhaedo in Sinan-gun, Jeonnam, respectively, and recklessly continued fishing. They disobeyed the Coast Guard’s orders to move to safe zones after receiving reports.
The West Sea Coast Guard has been providing fishermen with marine weather information in advance during weather warnings and has continued promotional and guidance activities for safety. However, reckless fishing has not ceased, so they plan to conduct intensive crackdowns.
A West Sea Coast Guard official stated, “Marine weather can change suddenly and unpredictably, so it is necessary to check weather conditions. To prevent marine accidents and ensure safety, reckless departures and fishing should be refrained from, and safety measures from port authorities must be followed properly.”
Meanwhile, the caught vessels will receive administrative penalties according to the rules on standards and procedures for administrative dispositions of violations of related laws: warnings for the first and second offenses, and cancellation of fishing permits for the third offense.
