GK-SBR Method, Leading Verification and Inspection
Strengthening Position in Environmental Business Sector
Kumho Construction's self-developed sewage treatment technology, the ‘GK-SBR Method (Continuous Batch Sewage Advanced Treatment Technology),’ has obtained green technology certification from the Ministry of Environment. Following the Ministry of Environment’s verification and validation, Kumho Construction is solidifying its position in the environmental business sector.

On the 15th, Kumho Construction announced that the GK-SBR method, jointly developed with Gyeongju City, Gyeongbuk Province, received green technology certification (No. GT-24-02070) from the Ministry of Environment. The green technology certification system officially recognizes eco-friendly technologies that reduce greenhouse gas and pollutant emissions.
The GK-SBR method is an advanced sewage treatment technology that effectively removes nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P), which cause drinking water source pollution and algal blooms. It features the subdivision of the existing 3 to 5-step process into 8 steps to maximize pollutant removal efficiency. Through this, the speed and efficiency of removing nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P) are improved, significantly reducing sewage treatment plant operating costs and energy consumption.
In fact, applying this method to the Uigok public sewage treatment facility in Gyeongju City resulted in approximately a 10.6% reduction in energy consumption for sewage treatment compared to the previous method. If this method is applied to 10 facilities in the Gyeongju area with a daily treatment capacity of over 500 tons, annual carbon dioxide (CO₂) emissions can be reduced by about 19 tons. This is equivalent to planting approximately 15,831 pine trees annually.
The GK-SBR method has once again been recognized for its technical excellence and eco-friendliness through this certification. Previously, it had received environmental new technology certification (No. 615) and verification (No. 269) from the Ministry of Environment.
A Kumho Construction official stated, “Obtaining this green technology certification officially recognizes the technical excellence and green nature (eco-friendliness) of the self-developed GK-SBR method. In line with the government’s Green New Deal policy, we will continue to contribute to energy savings and greenhouse gas reduction through various technology research and development that benefits the environment.”
Meanwhile, Kumho Construction is standing out in the environmental field through continuous research and development (R&D) and investment. It holds three environmental new technology certifications and verifications and two green technology certifications in areas such as high-concentration organic waste treatment, membrane filtration methods, and sewage and wastewater treatment methods, commercializing these technologies and accumulating construction performance.
This success is also reflected in order achievements. In September, Kumho Construction won a contract worth 115.7 billion KRW for the ‘Takmau-si (City) Sewage Treatment Facility Project’ in Cambodia, and domestically secured construction contracts worth approximately 220 billion KRW for the ‘Gongju Natural Gas Power Plant’ and 203.2 billion KRW for the Jeju City ‘Jeju Public Sewage Treatment Facility Modernization Project.’
