Chinese President Xi Jinping sent a congratulatory message to President-elect Donald Trump, emphasizing cooperation between the two countries.
According to China Central Television (CCTV) on the 7th, President Xi stated in the congratulatory message sent to President-elect Trump that "history clearly shows us that China and the United States 'benefit mutually when cooperating (合則兩利) and both suffer when fighting (鬪則俱傷),'" adding, "A stable, healthy, and sustainable China-US relationship aligns with the common interests of both countries and the expectations of the international community."
President Xi expressed hope that "the two countries will adhere to the principles of mutual respect, peaceful coexistence, and mutually beneficial cooperation, strengthen dialogue and communication, and properly manage differences," and further hoped to "expand mutually beneficial cooperation and walk the correct path of coexistence in the new era of China-US relations, benefiting both countries and the world." Han Zheng, Vice President of China, also sent a congratulatory message to J.D. Vance, Vice President-elect of the United States, congratulating him on his election.
President Xi's mention in the congratulatory message that both countries would suffer if they fought is analyzed to stem from expectations that trade and hegemony competition, including large-scale tariffs, could intensify with the launch of the second Trump administration. During his previous term, President-elect Trump defined China as a "strategic competitor" and implemented export controls and high tariffs citing national security reasons.
Earlier, major foreign media outlets including CNN reported that President Xi had a phone call with President-elect Trump.
