"Alcohol, Smoking, Kisses? This Is Not Right"… Malaysian Health Authorities Outraged Over 'Apartment'

"Concerns That Children May Sing Along to 'Apartment'"

Malaysia's Ministry of Health criticized the collaboration song "Apartment (APT.)" by BLACKPINK's Ros? and global pop star Bruno Mars, saying it "promotes negative Western behaviors."

On the 24th (local time), Malaysia's Ministry of Health raised concerns about the lyrics of "Apartment" through its official Facebook page. The health authorities pointed out that the term "Apartment" in the song is used as a place of seduction, normalizing behavior that conflicts with Eastern cultural values. They added, "What is more concerning is that this song is frequently used in SNS videos and is permeating daily life," noting, "Especially children might unconsciously sing along to these lyrics."

They also criticized lyrics such as "Kissy face, kissy face. Sent to your phone but, I'm trying to kiss your lips for real" and "Turn this APT into a club. I’m talking drink, dance, smoke, freak, party all night" from the song "Apartment."

The health authorities emphasized, "As parents, educators, and members of society, we must be vigilant about indiscriminately accepting Western cultural influences," and added, "While there may be various interpretations and supportive opinions from fans regarding this song, it is important to analyze the lyrics carefully and make your own judgment." Malaysia, where Islam is the state religion, has a Muslim population of 60%. Muslims consider alcohol taboo and do not drink.

Meanwhile, "Apartment," released on the 18th by Ros? and Bruno Mars, is a song inspired by the Korean drinking game "Apartment Game," featuring an addictive hook and easy-to-remember lyrics. The music video for "Apartment" reached 100 million views within five days of its release, and the song surpassed 100 million streams on the world's largest music platform, Spotify, in seven days. It is also expected to rank high on the US Billboard main singles chart "Hot 100," which will be announced on the 29th.
