Late Eom Gi-seop, Chairman of Hanjin Mulsan, Donated 1 Billion KRW Fund
Son Eom Woo-sang, CEO, Delivered 1 Million KRW Each to 20 Students
Dong-A University (President Lee Hae-woo) held the ‘2024 Academic Year Eom Gi-seop Scholarship Award Ceremony.’
The scholarship award ceremony, held on the 15th at the Seunghak Campus conference room of Dong-A University, was attended by President Lee Hae-woo, Eom Woo-sang, CEO of Hanjin Mulsan, Shin Yong-taek, Director of Dong-A University Student and Employment Support Office, Park Hyun-tae, Director of External and International Affairs, Kim Dae-jun, Head of Student Welfare Department, and scholarship recipients.
The ‘Eom Gi-seop Scholarship’ was established with 1 billion KRW donated by the late Eom Gi-seop, chairman of Hanjin Mulsan and an alumnus of Dong-A University’s Department of Chemistry, who also received an honorary doctorate in business administration in 2008. Chairman Eom donated a total of 1.3 billion KRW to his alma mater, including a personal donation of 1 billion KRW, before passing away in March of this year.
Dong-A University created the ‘Eom Gi-seop Scholarship’ with the 1 billion KRW donation from Chairman Eom and awards scholarships annually to current students in his name.
At the ceremony, 20 Dong-A University students each received 1 million KRW, totaling 20 million KRW in scholarships.
Eom Woo-sang, CEO of Hanjin Mulsan and son of the late Chairman Eom Gi-seop, said, “When my father asked the family about donating a large sum to his alma mater, I readily told him to follow his wishes. I believe that was the best thing I said in our conversations. Thanks to my father, we are able to provide this great opportunity to you all, which will benefit not only you but also our country, the company, and our family.”
President Lee Hae-woo said, “These heartfelt words must have touched everyone present here. This scholarship is more valuable and noble than any other. I hope the scholarship recipients will be inspired by the late Chairman Eom Gi-seop’s spirit of sharing and grow into talents needed by society, who will also give back what they have received to future generations.”
Scholarship recipient Park Ji-hyun (1st year, Korean Language and Literature) said, “This scholarship motivates me to work even harder to become a talent that Dong-A University and society desire.”
Founded in 1975, Hanjin Mulsan is a first-generation tool distribution company specializing in importing and selling overseas brand machinery tools. It has achieved annual sales exceeding 20 billion KRW, making it one of the leading small and strong companies in the domestic tool import industry.
The late Chairman Eom Gi-seop was also active in social contributions, joining the Honor Society as member No. 39, a high-donor group of the Busan Community Chest of Korea. Through the Eunkang Scholarship Foundation, established by former CEO Eom Jae-woo, he supported over 550 scholarship recipients with a total of 585 million KRW in scholarships.
