The Netflix series "Heukbaek Yori-sa: The Culinary Class War" (hereinafter "Heukbaek Yori-sa"), which ended amid great popularity, is returning for a second season.
On the 15th, Netflix confirmed the production of "Heukbaek Yori-sa" Season 2, stating, "We will continue the culinary entertainment craze sparked by Season 1." Season 2 is scheduled for release in the second half of next year. Kim Hak-min and Kim Eun-ji, PDs from Studio Slam (CEO Yoon Hyun-joon), who led Season 1, along with writer Mo Eun-seol, will reunite to present an even more upgraded culinary class war. The two PDs expressed their gratitude, saying, "Thanks to the viewers' interest, we were able to reach Season 2. We will strive to repay the expectations and love."
"Heukbaek Yori-sa" is a variety show depicting a culinary class war among 100 chefs, where the highly skilled underdog "Heuksujeo" chefs, praised for their exceptional taste, challenge South Korea's top star chefs, the "Baeksujeo." The judges include Baek Jong-won, CEO of The Born Korea, a powerhouse in the domestic food service industry, and Ahn Sung-jae, owner-chef of the fine dining restaurant "Mosoo Seoul," which holds the only Michelin 3-star rating in Korea as of 2024. Upon release, "Heukbaek Yori-sa" ranked first in the non-English TV series category in Korea on Netflix and entered the top 10 in 28 countries including Taiwan, Singapore, and Hong Kong. Each episode generated significant online buzz, achieving near-syndrome-level popularity. Various parodies flooded social media, and numerous memes related to the program were created.
People flocked to restaurants run by the participants, proving its national popularity. The restaurant "Via Toledo Pastabar," operated by Season 1 winner Chef Kwon Sung-jun of "Napoli Mafia," experienced a server crash as 110,000 people rushed to make reservations immediately after opening, and ticket scalping at 1.5 million KRW per person even appeared. Additionally, the "Night Tiramisu" he introduced during the "Convenience Store Battle" sold out through pre-orders as soon as it was officially launched at CU convenience stores. In this way, "Heukbaek Yori-sa" has been recognized as a variety show that revitalized the stagnant food service industry.
