Some Extreme Supporters' Excessive Defense
"This Is Not Support but Intelligent Anti" Criticism
Moon Dahye, daughter of former President Moon Jae-in, has been booked by the police on charges of drunk driving, amid which some extreme opposition supporters have raised absurd conspiracy theories suggesting it was a "police trap." Netizens strongly criticized these claims as "going too far."
Between the 5th and 6th, several posts appeared on pro-opposition internet cafes and online communities raising suspicions about Dahye's drunk driving accident, calling it "suspicious."
Earlier, on the early morning of the 5th, Dahye was driving under the influence in front of the Hamilton Hotel in Itaewon, Yongsan-gu, when she collided with a taxi that was following her while changing lanes. Subsequently, CCTV footage released through follow-up reports showed circumstances suggesting she may have violated a traffic signal.

After the accident was reported, one netizen claimed, "The police are also playing into the hands of the current government. Moon Dahye might have fallen into a trap," adding, "Usually, Itaewon does not conduct drunk driving checks well at 3 a.m." He also expressed, "Our Moon Dahye is not the type to do such a thing; President Moon’s heart must be hurting a lot."
Meanwhile, some focused on the fact that Dahye was driving Hyundai Motor Company's small car, the 'Casper,' and responded with 'supportive' comments. Comments included, "She is the daughter of a former president, and seeing her drive a compact car shows she is a proper person," "How frugal it is to drive a small car," and "It's unfortunate but admirable."
One netizen even claimed, "I think Moon Dahye sacrificed herself intentionally. Since they are going after her father (former President Moon), she sacrificed herself instead. It reminds me of Jesus."
Netizens strongly criticized the excessive defense by some supporters. Comments included, "If you committed a crime, you should be punished, what nonsense is this," "A reaction like that of fanatics," "Even the current opposition party has drawn a line with Dahye," and "At this point, they should be seen not as supporters but as intelligent anti-fans."
Meanwhile, immediately after the drunk driving accident, the police measured Dahye’s blood alcohol concentration, which was confirmed to be 0.14%, exceeding the license cancellation level (0.08% or higher). The police booked Dahye on charges of violating the Road Traffic Act (drunk driving).
The accident also caused ripples in the political sphere. On the 6th, Park Chan-dae, floor leader of the Democratic Party of Korea, responded to questions about the matter at a National Assembly press briefing by saying, "(Drunk driving) is something that should not be done," and added, "The party’s position would not be different. There is nothing special to say."
