This Top Lawmaker, Park Daesung, Advocates Death Penalty
"We Must Show Judicial Justice to the People"
"Hope It Brings Some Comfort to the Bereaved Families"
Lee Eon-ju, the senior member of the Democratic Party of Korea, argued that the death penalty should be imposed on Park Dae-sung, who murdered a student he had never met in Suncheon.
On the 2nd, Lee opened her statement on her social media (SNS) by saying, "I believe that humans should be cautious when judging other humans." She added, "There is no doubt that the death penalty, which is the state taking another person's life, should not be carried out recklessly," and said, "Since a person's life is unique, the execution of the death penalty due to a wrongful judgment is irreversible, isn't it?"
Nevertheless, she argued, "In extremely exceptional cases like this, where the brutality of the crime is beyond words, the offender's antisocial nature is severe, and as Professor Lee Soo-jung explained, there is no possibility of rehabilitation, and given the nature of the case, the offender is so clearly guilty that there is no room for error, I believe that the death penalty being sentenced and executed is necessary for the majority of good citizens and a peaceful society."
She continued, "The victim in this case, a high school girl, was out buying medicine for her disabled father when she was attacked. The state has the duty to protect such good citizens safely," and said, "One might excuse the state by saying it cannot prevent tragedies caused by sudden antisocial individuals and that the victim was simply unlucky. However, the state has the obligation to show judicial justice to the citizens who are angry in the face of such tragedies."
Lee emphasized, "The state must not neglect its duty to prevent future similar cases that could possibly occur by considering the human rights of antisocial individuals who are not worth even the slightest consideration," adding, "I hope that the perpetrator of this case will be sentenced to the maximum legal penalty, including the death penalty, and that this will bring some comfort to the shocked and grieving citizens and bereaved families, and at the same time, I hope that such incidents will never happen again."
Earlier, Park Dae-sung stabbed and killed a teenage girl, A, whom he had never met, on the street in Jorye-dong, Suncheon-si, Jeollanam-do, around 12:44 a.m. on the 26th of last month. He had been drinking alone at a store, took a weapon, and chased after A, who was passing in front of the store, committing the crime. It is known that he carried the weapon and wandered around bars and karaoke rooms for about two hours afterward.
