KIPO Opens 39 Million Records of 'Chinese Patent Gazette' Translated into Hangul

A dataset of 39 million Chinese patent gazettes translated into Korean will be made publicly available. Patent gazettes refer to official publications that disclose patent technology information.

On the 30th, the Korean Intellectual Property Office (KIPO) announced that it will upload the Korean translations of Chinese patent gazette data onto the patent information open platform ‘KIPRIS plus,’ allowing anyone to use it for free.

The data to be opened covers Chinese patent gazettes published from February 2010 to July of last year, enabling domestic patent users such as individuals and companies to search Chinese patent documents in Korean without having to separately search in Chinese.

Additionally, companies providing services based on intellectual property data are expected by KIPO to create new services by incorporating Chinese patents into patent analysis such as prior art searches and value assessments.

Previously, since 2018, KIPO has been discussing with the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) ways to provide Korean translations of overseas patent gazette data to the private sector.

Based on this, KIPO opened 5 million Korean-translated European patent gazettes in 2022 and 14.9 million U.S. patent gazettes in 2023. Last year, it introduced an AI-based ‘Chinese→Korean’ machine translation system, and after a year of data refinement and verification, it has been able to publicly release Korean translations of Chinese patent gazettes starting from the 30th of this month.

China is the third country for which KIPO provides Korean translations of overseas patent gazettes. Next year, Korean translations of Japanese patent gazettes will also be additionally opened.

The total number of Korean-translated patent gazette data from Europe, the U.S., and China reaches 58.8 million, and the Japanese patent gazette Korean translations to be additionally opened next year amount to 23 million.

KIPO plans to sequentially open Korean translations of overseas patent gazettes to improve accessibility to overseas patent data, thereby contributing to the efficiency of domestic companies’ research and development (R&D) and strengthening technological competitiveness.

Lee In-su, Director of the Industrial Property Information Bureau at KIPO, stated, “Making patent technology documents from countries around the world easily and quickly searchable in Korean without language barriers will play an important role in enhancing Korea’s competitiveness in the era of technological hegemony. KIPO will continue to focus on expanding the range of open data and improving data quality by utilizing artificial intelligence technology.”
