Pyeongtaek City to Begin Maintenance on Frequently Flooded 'Segyo Underpass'

Dredging, Temporary Pump Station Installation, and Retention Basin Construction

Pyeongtaek City in Gyeonggi Province announced on the 25th that it will undertake maintenance such as dredging nearby rivers to resolve the recurring flooding issue at the 'Segyo Underpass,' which experienced heavy flooding again on the 21st following heavy rains in July this year.

The city diagnosed that the water volume in the Doilcheon area has increased due to large-scale development projects such as Brain City, Jije Segyo District, and Gajae District, and that the river water level can rise sharply due to reduced water retention function caused by upstream river improvement projects. The city explained that especially during heavy rains, the inflow to the lower reaches of Doilcheon rapidly increases, leading to flooding of tributaries and subsequent flooding of the underpass.

Accordingly, on the 24th, Mayor Jeong Jang-seon visited the site to inspect the situation and discuss measures to prevent flooding. As solutions, Mayor Jeong instructed ▲ river maintenance including dredging of Doilcheon ▲ inspection of the water retention function of detention ponds within urban development sites ▲ early construction of retention basins and installation of temporary pump facilities. He also ordered dredging of drainage channels and slope maintenance at the Segyo Underpass.

Mayor Jeong said, "Flooding of the underpass could potentially lead to a major disaster," adding, "We will strive to prepare both short- and long-term measures to prevent flooding from recurring."
