The tagless era of Seoul subway is approaching faster.

The tagless payment system refers to a method where payment is automatically processed when a card or mobile phone is carried through the subway gate.

On the 24th, Baekho, President of Seoul Transportation Corporation, visited Seongsin Women's University Station to check the pilot operation status of the tagless payment system on the Ui-Sinseol Light Rail Transit and received a report on the progress of the pilot operation of the system being developed in-house by the corporation.

In June this year, the corporation completed the first phase of in-house technology verification at four stations (Yongdap Station on Line 2, Oksu Station on Line 3, Sadang Station on Line 4, and Dapsimni Station on Line 5). Currently, the second phase of the in-house verification project is underway across all stations on Lines 1 to 8, planning to enhance the system's versatility by applying technology that estimates passengers' actual movement paths in conjunction with telecommunications base stations within the stations.

The corporation stated that the tagless system currently being developed is a hybrid system combining BLE (Bluetooth Low Energy) and UWB, which is a more advanced system compared to the BLE-based tagless system operating on the Ui-Sinseol Light Rail Transit.

At this event, President Baekho urged the officials to do their best to ensure that the tagless system, standardized by Seoul city’s technical standards, can be operated in all subway stations on Lines 1 to 8 by next year.

Currently, the corporation is forming a consultative body with Seoul city, Seoul Bus Transport Association, T-money, and other related Seoul transportation organizations to establish technical standards for the tagless system to be applied to Seoul’s transportation facilities.

President Baekho said, “Once the tagless system is commercialized, it is expected that citizens’ convenience in using public transportation will improve and congestion within stations will be alleviated, greatly enhancing the subway usage environment,” adding, “We will strive to implement future-oriented transportation services incorporating advanced technology to increase citizen satisfaction and trust.”
