As the Chuseok holiday approaches, cybercrimes impersonating public institutions are expected to surge, requiring caution.
On the 14th, the National Police Agency, Financial Supervisory Service, Financial Services Commission, and Ministry of Science and ICT jointly provided security guidelines and prevention methods to prevent holiday cyber fraud damage.
To prevent damage, the government urged not to click on internet addresses (URLs) and phone numbers of unclear origin included in text messages. They also advised strengthening smartphone security settings to prevent installation of unknown applications (apps) and recommended downloading apps only through authorized open markets. Furthermore, if the other party requests financial information or money, it is essential to verify their identity accurately via phone or video call. They also urged deleting photos of resident registration cards, driver's licenses, and passports stored on smartphones.
They also provided measures to take if one has been a victim of cyber fraud or suspects fraud. If financial information leakage through malicious apps is suspected, call the call center to request a blanket payment freeze on your account. Also, if you have deposited cash into an account due to voice phishing, report the damage to the National Police Agency and apply for a payment freeze. If you suffer damage from cybercrime during the holiday period, you can file a report online through the 'National Police Agency Cybercrime Reporting System (ECRM)'.
