Providing Benefits to 100 People Over 6 Months by Visiting 3 Senior Centers Monthly
“I feel great fulfillment when the elderly, whose hair I have neatly styled, look into the mirror and smile brightly. Although it is a small talent-sharing effort, I want to continue volunteering for the seniors who are waiting,” said volunteer Park Insook of the ‘Visiting Hairdressing Volunteer Group’ in Yangcheon-gu, Seoul.
Yangcheon-gu (Mayor Lee Gijae) is promoting a ‘Visiting Hairdressing Service’ through the talent donation of volunteers for elderly residents who have difficulty visiting hair salons and barbershops due to mobility issues.
Eleven volunteers holding hairdressing licenses gathered with the desire to share warmth with their neighbors by using their hairdressing skills, forming the ‘Visiting Hairdressing Volunteer Group’ in March and beginning their activities.
Starting with the Sinjeong 3-dong Sinjeong I-Pen House 1 Complex Senior Center, they visit three senior centers monthly on a rotating basis, including the Sinjeong Supsok Village Apartment Senior Center and the Sinwol 7-dong Sinwol Siyeong Apartment Senior Center, taking responsibility for the hairdressing needs of the elderly. Within six months of starting the service, about 100 seniors have received heartfelt hair care from the volunteers.
The district plans to expand the number of target senior centers and volunteers so that more elderly residents can benefit from the hairdressing service. Individuals or groups interested in participating in the hairdressing volunteer service can contact the Yangcheon-gu Volunteer Center.
Mayor Lee Gijae said, “The visiting hairdressing service is a great driving force in practicing respect and love for local seniors. I express my gratitude for the hard work and passion of the volunteer group members, and the district will continue to provide administrative support so that seniors are not left isolated and can receive various services.”
